This school's website takes the indefensible position that the viewer should select his/her monitor screen size to suit the webmaster's convenience ("This site is optimized for 800x600 viewing"). Do they expect anyone using a different screen size to go out and get a new monitor with an 800×600 screen? Does the webmaster know that more than 80% of WWW users now have screens much larger than the 800×600 size for which this website is "optimized"? The most popular screen resolution now in use is 1024×768, with 1280×1024 coming up fast. It is doubtful that you could find an 800×600 screen for sale these days, except maybe in a flea market. Just what does "optimized" mean here, anyway? This attitude is an antiquated holdover from the mid-1990s, and should quickly be updated (discarded),

About EDNET in Kings County 1996 – 1997
Under the former Kings County District School Board,
the "Connecting School and Communities" project was begun.
Its purpose is to connect all schools in the District (Kings County)
to the Department of Education and Culture's Ednet, and through
this gateway to the Internet.
The project is presently underway and the first installation was
completed at the Teachers' Centre, New Minas, on May 8, 1996...
Several schools are presently "up and running", including:
West Kings High School
Aldershot Elementary School
Cornwallis District High School
Central Kings Rural High School
Kings County Academy

Note: On 1 August 1996, Nova Scotia's 21 district school boards
and one conseil d'ecole were amalgamated by the provincial
government into six regional boards and one conseil scolaire
acadien provincial.
At that time, "the former Kings County District School Board"
became part of the Annapolis Valley Regional School Board.
The Teachers' Centre was located in the former Highbury
Elementary School building on Highbury Road in New Minas.

Technology-Aided Exams
This (spring 2008) is the second year LHS has made use of the technology from the Assistive Technology room. Students were able to write exams through the use of the Kurzweil program where exams are scanned, put unto the program and students "plug in" to hear and see the text. Answering exam questions is done on the computer and teachers get the printout. There are other students who used IPods listening to the directions of the test in the teacher's voice to help them through the exam. Then there were others who worked through ITalk which allowed them to record their voice to answer questions. For others there were pods of students receiving individual help for scribing or giving directions and clarifying exam questions...

This school's website takes the indefensible position that the viewer should select his/her browser to suit the webmaster's convenience ("Best viewed at 800x600 using Netscape Navigator 4+ or Internet Explorer 4+"). A competent website manager would recognize that, in today's circumstances, the website must accomodate the viewer, not the other way round. A well-designed website, especially one representing a public institution, will work properly with Firefox, Safari, and Opera as well as IE. The focus on Netscape, while overlooking Firefox and Safari (both much more widely-used than Netscape) tells us that the people in charge of this website are years behind the times in understanding how the WWW works. And what about that ridiculous requirement "Best viewed at 800x600..." — do they expect anyone using a different screen size to go out and get a new monitor with an 800×600 screen? Do those in charge here know that no monitors with an 800×600 screen have been available for years? (More evidence that they are years behind the times.)

New School
Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School (9-12)
A new building for this school was announced by the Education Minister on 8 April 2008. The Department of Education will replace Yarmouth Consolidated Memorial High School with a new $24.9-million facility, which is expected to open in 2011, to serve more than 900 Yarmouth students in grades 9 to 12. The Tri-County Regional School Board originally submitted a request for renovation of the existing high school building, which was approved in 2003. Since then, the school board has reviewed the plan, and in 2006 asked for a new school that has now been approved by the Department of Education.

Glace Bay Junior High (7-9)
A new building for this school was announced by the Education Minister on 2 May 2007. The first step will be the selection of the site, followed by design and construction.
Education Department news release 2 May 2007
An announcement, that a new junior high school, expected to cost about $13 million, to replace St. Michael's and Morrison Junior High schools would open in 2007, was made four years ago. The project has been delayed as the Department of Education continued to search for an appropriate site. About twenty different sites have been tested, some rejected for undermining (old abandoned mine tunnels under the site that could cause unpredictable subsidence and possibly the destruction of the building any time after it was completed and occupied), other properties for a variety of reasons. The site selection was recently narrowed down to two possible locations, one on the Donkin Highway and the other on Wallace's Road. The results of drilling on the Wallace's Road site are expected to be reported next week.

Pictou Island Wikipedia
Connecting Canadians
Canada's Community Access Program
A Case Study of Government Strategic Investment on the Internet
In late March 1999, as deadlines loomed for Industry Canada to complete
the connection of thousands of schools and rural Community Access Program
sites to the Internet, Pictou Island sat placidly amidst late winter ice packs
seven miles [11 km] off the northern shore of Nova Scotia, a community of
forty with a school population of three, unlinked. On Friday, March 26, 1999,
the ministry had received a letter from Nova Scotia provincial officials,
inquiring when Industry Canada planned to wire Pictou's school. Only a
few days remained to meet the commitment of Industry Canada Minister
John Manley to link all Canadian schools to the Internet by March 31st.
The note caught Industry Canada staff by surprise. They had understood that
all of the Nova Scotia connections were in place. Industry Canada assigned
Kim McKinnon and Ian Cameron to get the job done within the Minister's deadline.
McKinnon tried to contact Pictou's schoolteacher, but there was no telephone at
the school. She called the aviation company on the mainland. The proprietor,
who knew the teacher, offered the teacher's home telephone number, which
McKinnon quickly dialed. "You're not connected to the Internet yet?" she asked.
"No," the teacher replied. "The provinces put all the plans together, but I think
they forgot about us because we are too small."
On Monday morning, March 29th, McKinnon and Cameron flew with a new
computer and Direct PC dish to Halifax, and made the last leg by car to the coast
of Northumberland Strait. That was as far as the weather permitted. There was
no bridge. The weekend's foul weather had grounded the Cessna service to the
island, leaving passage by boat as the only means of crossing. Warm-season
ferry service was months away. With three days to make the installation and
the deadline, McKinnon and Cameron were out of options...

Statements by Members of the House of Commons, Ottawa
BLACK HISTORY MONTH Mr. Ron MacDonald, M.P. (Dartmouth, Lib.):
Mr. Speaker, today marks the last day of Black History Month (of February 1995). As the member of Parliament for Dartmouth I am proud to say that I represent the largest indigenous black communities in Canada, in Preston, North Preston, Cherrybrook and Lake Loon.
The Preston communities have a rich and compelling history. It has contributed greatly to the culture of Nova Scotia and indeed all of Canada. Unfortunately for the rest of the country, much of this cultural heritage has been unwritten, instead being passed on from generation to generation by word of mouth. Students of Cole Harbour High have sought to change this by using modern communications technologies.
As a project for Black History Month students have created a
site on the Internet's world wide web
to give millions of computer users across Canada and around the world a glimpse of this rich heritage. I ask the House to join with me in congratulating the students involved in this project for their tremendous efforts to bring Nova Scotia's black history to the world.

Hansard, 28 February 1995 (emphasis added)
Note: This is believed to be the first time ever, that the phrase "world wide web" was spoken on the floor of the House of Commons.

Highland Park Junior High School (7-9) Halifax
New School
South End Elementary School (P-6) Halifax
Replacement for St. Mary's School, Inglis Street School, LeMarchant-St. Thomas School and the Beaufort School Annex. Construction was scheduled to begin in 2007, to be completed by September 2009, but early in 2007 it was decided to delay the construction of this new elementary school until a comprehensive community consultation could be held. In mid-2007, this consultation process developed into broad long-range planning process focused on engaging the public in a constructive conversation about the future of the Halifax Regional schools...

Southwest Regional School Board Yarmouth
With approval of Bill 47 in June 2000, the Southwest Regional School Board was split into two district school boards — the South Shore District School Board comprising Lunenburg and Queens Counties, and the Tri-County District School Board comprising Shelburne, Yarmouth and Digby Counties.
Effective 1 August 2004, the Southwest Regional School Board was officially split into the South Shore Regional and Tri-County Regional School Boards.
The earlier split in 2000 was experimental. The later split in 2004 implemented the split permanently.

This unique (as far as I know) feature shows a highly-desirable but uncommon understanding of the special characteristics and possibilities of the WWW. Do you suppose they could bottle it for distribution among other public institutions?

Annapolis Valley Regional School Board Berwick
The Annapolis Valley Regional School Board's website takes the indefensible position that the viewer should select his/her browser to suit the webmaster's convenience ("This site is best viewed in Internet Explorer"). A competent website manager would recognize that, in today's circumstances, the website must accomodate the viewer, not the other way round. A well-designed website, especially one representing a public institution, will work properly with Firefox, Safari, and Opera as well as IE. This isn't difficult; all that is needed is adherence to the website design standards published by W3C. These are simple, widely-recognized, standards that are officially required by such public institutions as the
Government of Canada:
"All GoC (Government of Canada) Web sites must comply with W3C..."
The AVRSB's remarkably-obtuse policy tells us two things:
(1) The webmaster who designs this website has no understanding worth mentioning, of the WWW as it exists and is used today, and
(2) the AVRSB management isn't minding the store.
