In 2010 we celebrated the 250th Anniversary of the arrival of the New England Planters in Hants and Kings Counties. Under proclamations issued in 1758 and 1759 Governor Lawrence offered free land and attractive terms (including an elected assembly and freedom of religion) to Protestants willing to move to Nova Scotia. In 1760 the first of the New England Planters settled the townships of Newport, Falmouth, Cornwallis and Horton. Many Planter descendants still live in the area, some on the original land grants.

Planter 2010 Celebration in Nova Scotia
Description of the migration in the 1760s of hundreds of people from New England to Nova Scotia – The New England Planters by Peter Landry. On 12 October 1758, Governor Lawrence, with the advice of his Council, prepared a Proclamation, which was published in the Boston Gazette. It informed the people of New England that since the enemy which had formerly disturbed and harassed the province was no longer able to do so, the time had come to people and cultivate, not only the lands made vacant by the removal of the Acadians, but other parts of "this valuable province" as well. Though it was anticipated that the settlers from New England would start coming in during 1759, they did not, as it took time to make arrangements. It was in the following year, 1760, that the first of the settlers started to arrive...
